Training and Performance Improvement in iNGOs: Giving our gift at a global scale

Working for a cause can be very rewarding, both professionally and personally. There are often many project and career advancement opportunities available for us in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) or international non-governmental organizations (INGOs).
However, there are unique challenges that instructional designers and performance improvement professionals can face when trying to break into these organizations during a career change or when expanding a client base to include the social sector.
In this session, Lisa and Rich will:
- Translate common instructional design and performance improvement terminology used in consulting work with iNGO clients
- Compare instructional design and performance improvement work in iNGO contexts with corporate for-profit, nonprofit, and academic contexts
About the presenters
Lisa A. Giacumo is a new assistant professor this year, in the Organizational Development and Workplace Learning (OPWL) program at Boise State University. Her current research interests focus on instructional design for training and performance support solutions, global training initiatives, social and digital media in training and performance improvement, and competency development in instructional designers. Before joining OPWL at Boise State University, Lisa served as a lead training and instructional designer and consultant on the PARCEL consortium project for Oxfam GB. In addition, she has served as an instructional designer and a consultant for US-based nonprofits, for-profits, community colleges, and universities, where she specialized in online, blended, e-learning, and multimedia design and development.
Rich Peavy has managed performance support and training initiatives in non-profit, public education, and international humanitarian aid sectors. In his current role with Samaritan's Purse International Relief, he serves as the International Projects Training Manager. His primary function includes building staff capacity of the organization’s worldwide field staff and disaster responders across multiple languages and locations with limited infrastructure to staff with widely varied educational backgrounds. Additionally, he has participated directly in humanitarian relief activities in numerous countries including Haiti, Iraq, and South Sudan. Rich holds a Bachelors of Science in Telecommunications from the University of Florida and is currently pursuing a Masters of Science in Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning from Boise State University.
